Casey Gibson of Filligar, the YandP.tv Rock Party‘s headliner, spills his guts for the pretty people.
Hometown? Dream town?
We all grew up in Chicago together, so that’s where the sports teams we root for play. Dream town is so far from our minds right now… I think we’ve found one thing or another about pretty much everywhere we’ve traveled that is dreamy. In the words of Robert Plant, “Woman, I’ve got to ramble.”
Who inspires you?
Inspired by our families (we’d love to prove to everyone that we’re not crazy) and other musicians. Stones, Doors, Zeppelin, Clash, Nirvana are our essentials. Also film has been a great influence on us… A lot of the music I compose is composed while watching TV. It’s fun to score stuff, and a lot of times you get some good material that way.
Favorite place in LA?
We’re west side guys. Venice, Santa Monica. We’ll head up to West Hollywood to see music occasionally but otherwise we stay on the beach. It’s been a big inspiration for the past few years. If I have to narrow it down more than that, I’d say Big Dean’s on the Santa Monica pier is home.
Best advice ever received?
Everyone’s got different tenets to live by, but for me personally, I was able to meet Garth Hudson (keyboardist for the Band) not too long ago. He advised that what I carry on tour should be the lightest possible load–forget the heavy equipment. He was making a joke, but the sentiment stuck… Minimalism is always better. Shortest distance between two points is a straight line kinda thing.
When did you lose your virginity?
Not sure I want to divulge everything about my personal triumphs, but I can tell you that the Stones’ “Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’” was the song. That’s all you get.
What’s your vice?
This sounds lame, but it’s rock and roll. It’s the best thing ever invented and I listen to it all day, every day. Can’t get enough.
How would you define love?
I’m too young to know anything about love… I know what I love to do (play music, be merry, make other people happy) and I know I love my family & friends, but I’m not Gene Simmons. You’ll have to talk to the Doctor about that.
Something only your mother knows about.
Only my mother knows how squeamish I am. Don’t talk about anything anatomical or gruesome around me–I’m a fainter. I lost consciousness and fell off my kitchen barstool when my dad told me (at age 12) about how a woman’s body works.
Anything else you’d like to confess.
No more confessions–this has already been TMI. If anyone has any follow-ups, please find me at Bardot and I’ll consider answering. Or, get the other guys to spill their guts. There are a few good answers in our band to questions 5 and 9.
Join Young & Pretty, Casey, Filligar, and more Saturday, January 28th for a showcase featuring up and coming musicians and to party with those who celebrate art, music and culture.
