Icky Blossoms is from Omaha, Nebraska, which is “the land of wicked snowstorms,” as Sarah Bohling describes it to Y&P. The band met at while snowed-in at a house party and instantly connected. About Icky Blossoms’ inception she said, “If you believe in feeling connected with someones aura right away–you could say that is what happened with us.” Icky Blossoms sent their demo to TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek who produced their most recent self-titled album. Sarah told us that Icky Blossoms had a “wish list of producers to work with that we compiled as a band. Sitek was on top of that list and we emailed him some demos and sent positive energy his way. Weeks later he [Sitek] said he dug our stuff…so we flew off to LA.”
Read our interview with Sarah of the Icky Blossoms and be sure to pick up their album and catch them on tour this fall!
[Y&P] What was it like working with Dave Sitek?
[Sarah Bohling]: It was a blast. We basically just moved into his house for a month and had fun partying with fancy equipment. He is very knowledgeable musically/technically and into calculated experimenting.
Is it sometimes tough being the only girl in the band?
No way. I’m in love with every member of the band. They are the weirdest forces of nature I know. They encourage being uncomfortable, strange, active, and creative. I never feel like an outcast, I feel like a family. In addition, I have been a tomboy my whole life so this is normal.
Where is the best meal found in Omaha?
There are tons of awesome local restaurants here with options for both vegetarians and omnivores. I’ll just list some good spots: Amsterdam Falafel and Kabob, Lot 2, La Buvette, Taco Truck…
Who are your favorite fans?
The ones that gyrate on the floor without apology.
What (or who) wakes you up in the morning?
My cat, Sweetbreads, bites my toes at sunrise every god damn day. Occasionally it is an alarm. When we’re on the road…probably Derek farting.
Most memorable concert you’ve gone to?
Concert for Equality in Omaha a couple years back. It was an awesome cause and a bunch of rad bands came together for it. Desa, Cursive, Gillian Welch, Simon Joyner—it was just awesome hanging out with truly inspiring people all day.
Shoes or bare-feet?
Combat boots.
What do you think has been the most significant change Icky Blossoms has gone through over the past few years?
Designing and programming our light show. It changes the atmosphere of our set so much.
Favorite character from a novel?
Mr. Rosewater
In high school you were the ______ kid.
Academic
If you weren’t scared of this, you would do it.
DYING…just kidding. Probably finding a way to travel to the ocean floor. What the hell is down there? I’m curious.
Have you ever run from the cops?
Absolutely. I was 18. I jumped a fence and had to lay face down in a small creek bed for over an hour. Naturally I didn’t get caught…I’m elusive as all get out.
What are you most looking forward to this coming fall?
Running around the US and meeting people and playing music. Also watching the new season of Breaking Bad.
Best advice ever received?
Grab the bull by the balls and swing it around like a crazed cowgirl. Also hydrate regularly.
