gun range

Shooting an AK-47 outside Phnom Penh, Cambodia

In a tuk tuk traveling through an arcade of palms on a dirt road full of potholes, we arrived at our destination: the shooting range at a military base located outside the city of Phnom Penh. Now this military base was more like a garage but instead of cars, guns were racked up on the lime-green walls. There was a single folding table with chairs that featured a “Gun Menu.” After viewing the menu which featured choices such as throwing a hand grenade into a pond for $80, or shooting an American AK-47 for $40 (prices have gone up over the past few years). Aside from taking riflery at summer camp I do not know much about guns, and being too afraid of the idea of a hand grenade blowing me up, I opted for the “American AK-47″.

I was offered a cold beer for “muay dollar” (one dollar) which the man pulled out of a dusty red and white plastic cooler and was then led into the back room to the indoor shooting range. They had put some coconuts at the end of the range as my targets. The AK-47 was placed in a wooden Y-stand which helped me prop up the heavy gun. Dripping sweat from the heat, nerves, and excitement, I took a swig of beer,  walked up to shoot, and pulled the trigger.

Milly Spring 2013 Fashion Show at Lincoln Center

Michelle Smith, creative director and designer of Milly, debuted her Spring 2013 collection during New York Fashion Week at Lincoln Center. Ryan Lotche, Tinsley Mortimer, Mya, Ramona from NYC Real Housewives and the Saturdays (a Spice Girl-esque pop band in the UK) sat in the front row along with the buyers and GMs of Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman.

The lights lowered and the music began to pound. Out came an unexpected slim-fit pencil skirt followed by peach-colored  ankle pants with zippers that zip all the way from the hem to the waistline. Neon bras popped out from mesh tank tops. The body-hugging silhouettes and exposed, black thick zippers lend themselves well to concert-goers or late-night party animals.

Spring ’13 was novel, modern and different but there were still winks of classic Milly– a flouncy white dress with a flared skirt and even a silver python pencil skirt that would kill a cocktail party.

Congratulations to Michelle and the Milly team for putting on an exciting show that gave me goosebumps!

I attended a kickboxing match in Phnom Penh located in a big warehouse-like stadium. The bleachers were filled with locals who came to watch free boxing matches held on the weekends. Watch your pockets…children climb up from behind the bleachers looking to swipe anything they can get their hands on.
